Beijing is the modern capital of the largest nation on earth. It sets the agenda for the political, cultural and economic direction of China and its 1.25 billion people. With it's fast growing economy (17% annual growth), Beijing is currently reforming and expanding it's infrastructure to coincide with it's remarkable growth. In preparation for the 2008 Olympic Games, 22 of the 37 sites must be built, including the Olympic Stadium and the Olympic village. The planned Olympic Green will combine sport, culture and the environment. Home of the 17,500 bed Olympic village, as well as the Olympic stadium and the site for 14 competition venues, the Olympic Green puts more than 50% of the sporting events within 5 minutes of the Olympic village.
Beijing's election as Host City marks the first time the Olympic Games will be held in China. Based on the Evaluation Commission's report, 96% of the 12.5 million citizens of Beijing alone were in
favor of hosting the 2008 Games.
